The CIO needed to present new mechanisms for IT governance and for linking the IT strategy with the business strategy and goals. The challenges included limited resources, lack of strategy definition, and lack of transparency in decision making.
Intervention
We worked closely with the CIO on the following:
Analyzing current IT investments, operating cost, and work force, and linking these to enterprise applications (to determine the true cost of each business system)
Establishing a system to understand the strategic relevance of each IT application (by setting the dial to support market position, business goals, and requirements in alignment with business stakeholders)
Developing an IT strategic roadmap (3-to-5-year perspective) based in business- and technology objectives
Developing a project-evaluation system to align IT investment decisions with strategic business priorities and economic-return evaluation across divisions
Outlining a new IT strategic-planning process
Making recommendations for the creation and composition of an IT steering committee
Results
The CIO gained a new language for engaging the business in a way that enabled IT to be more effective, more proactive, and more respected inside the organization.
